Hellooo friends!
As a gift to you on my birthday, I give to you my top 3 tips on keeping a fiddle leaf fig alive and well! Its my 29th birthday today and I am so excited! I am also getting a hair cut so if you want to check that out – make sure to follow along on my Instagram Stories!
This is a bit of a different post than my usual stuff.. but its in keeping with one of my very first blog series on turning a black thumb green (which you can read HERE). Full disclosure, Joanna Gaines inspired me to write this post – doesn’t she inspire us all ALWAYS? She is amazing!
So I have had Figaro, the fiddle leaf fig for roughly a year ish now and he was gifted to me by my bff, Sabrina. I don’t have any before pics of him when he first moved to our home, but I have managed to keep him alive and well and I wanted to share some of my top tips with you guys!
How to Take Care of a Fiddle Leaf Fig
Okay so first up.. these plant’s are basically an essential if you want to get in with the plant trend in home decor. They are a staple in every one’s home, whether they be faux or real. Michaels sells some great faux ones for $99 which you can snag at 50% off on sale days. Ikea even carries these! I have seen some stunning ones over at Home Sense. For the real deal, you can pick one up from your local nursery or Home Depot and they cost around $150, I think. I didn’t actually purchase mine, so I am not sure what the current cost is.
They are tropical plants – What this means is that in their natural habitat, they live in the shade of other trees and probably don’t get direct sunlight. But they do get sunlight, as tropical countries tend to be sunny (duhh areeba). Hence, they have adapted to have wide green leaves, that enable them to absorb sunlight indirectly and in large amounts!
So first tip – DUST your fig’s leaves! If you do NOTHING other than water your fig occasionally and dust your leaves, your fig will love you and last you a while! Here is my daughter helping me with dusting haha 😉
If you can spray them with a plant spritzer after a quick dusting. My fig seems to love that and does really well when I do this extra step.
They also don’t need a lot of water, growing in a tropical climate where the air is humid and moist. At most, mine needs 1.5 cup of water every week. But its fussy, and needs water exactly on the same day every week (which is Monday for us) or it will start drooping.
Second tip – Put a calendar alert on your phone to water them on TIME! My baby is fussy and your fig could be too.. so try to water it on the dot, if you can 😉
Given that they grow in the shade of other trees, they don’t need direct sunlight.
Third tip – No direct sunlight!! Make sure you pick a corner in your home that is brightly lit but will not flood the fiddle leaf fig with direct sunlight! This front entryway in our home gets the most day light (second to the back of the house) but because of our door, we never get direct sunlight here. So it is perfect for Figaro!
Those are my top 3 tips for you! If you want some more technical tips like about potting soil, when to replant etc I highly recommend picking up a copy of the Magnolia Journal’s Spring Edition and reading through that! There are some great tips in there that I will be applying over the summer!
Hope this was helpful in converting you from a faux plant lady to a real one 😉
Hope you have a great day friends!
Hugs!
