Your Favourite Coffee Shop Recipes – At Home!

Recipes

Right now we are all baking our feelings and mourning the loss of coffee shop visits. I mean, I certainly am. My idea of a relaxing self-care routine is definitely heading to my local coffee shop or Starbucks, and ordering an english breakfast tea (or a latte if I am feeling fancy) and getting a treat for myself. Now, that this is no longer a possibility with COVID-19, lets make those treats at home and indulge in some self care.

Why should we bake during this stressful time? Well, let me tell you what the research says – and fun fact, I collaborated with one of the author’s on my PhD work on Creativity!:

A study from the Journal of Positive Psychology suggests that people who frequently take a turn at small, creative projects report feeling more relaxed and happier in their everyday lives. The researchers followed 658 people for about two weeks, and found that doing small, everyday things like cooking and baking made the group feel more enthusiastic about their pursuits the next day.

Conner, T. S., DeYoung, C. G., & Silvia, P. J. (2018). Everyday creative activity as a path to flourishing. The Journal of Positive Psychology, 13(2), 181-189.

So now, that we have establish that there is some scientific backing to “baking our feelings”, let’s get to the yummy recipes!

First up, lets get the coffee started. Now, we all know the Dalgona Coffee Recipe that is whirring around the internet. Well, let me tell you that Sarah from Flour and Spice Blog is the OG person who has perfected this recipe like no one, and its PERFECT.

Okay so now that we have the caffeinated beverage sorted, lets get to some yummy treats:

What is a good coffee without a delicious coffee cake to go with it??! Marzia from Little Spice Jar has a treasure chest of delicious recipes that look tantalizing, but this Old Fashioned Sour Cream Coffee Cake in particular seems like the most divine pairing with the whipped coffee by Sarah or my favourite afternoon cup o’ tea.

If you weren’t into baking before this post, I bet you are now!?! Lets keep going, shall we. I have two more mouth-watering recipes for you.

The next one is a super easy, THREE ingredient recipe to make delectable and completely devourable-in-5-seconds Toffee Squares, by none other than Amina of Hungry Paprika’s. I mean COME ON… thank goodness I am working from home, and leggings are my uniform because after these recipes heck I need them!!

And last (but not least heh), I have my very favourite Banana Bread recipe to share with you!

Mummy’s Banana Bread

So… there you have it! FOUR delectable, delicious, recipes that will take you back to the days when we were able to go lounge at coffee shops and cafes.

And if that didn’t convince you, the science also states the following about baking:

“By following detailed diaries kept by the study subjects, Connor found that in addition to feeling happier, people who worked on little creative projects every day also felt they were “flourishing”—a psychological term that describes the feeling of personal growth. That could mean that the good feeling that comes with pulling a freshly-baked loaf of bread out of the oven could carry over into the next day, making that baker more likely to keep on with their little acts of creative cooking, Ough writes”

So your baked products today are a seed that you sow for tomorrow, with the fruit being better mood (hopefully) and giving you a sense of positivity – and heck we all need that in these difficult times!

Hope you enjoyed this little blog post and a special thanks to Sarah, Marzia and Amina for graciously giving me permission to share their recipes on here.
