Hello friends! Happy Monday friends – I hope your day is going well! I am heading home today after 4 fun and science filled days in Boston for a conference. But I wanted to take this post today to share my recent kitchen island make over with you. When we purchased our home, I chose our island colour to be this rich brown because little did I know, that was not on trend. But to me, it so was. But I have NOT loved this since then.. so when Fusion Mineral Paint approached me to try out their new Tones for Tots collection, I had the absolute perfect project in mind! Enter.. our kitchen island!!
Now, here are a few reasons I leaned towards choosing the Island as a project for this particular line of paint. First of all, the Tones for Tots line (Which you can check out HERE) is absolutely 100% SAFE for children! This is such a huge deal for me , given that the Island is my daughter’s absolute favourite spot to hang out while I am making dinner, or to eat a snack. If you follow along on Instagram and watch my stories, you may have seen her wave from the island while I cook. So, a paint that is MEANT to be used in nursery’s and meets toy standards for safety was the ABSOLUTE perfect fit for this area, given how much time baby girl spends there.
Fusion Mineral Paint’s Tone For Tot’s line is 100% VOC free (free of volatile organic compounds) – meaning no yucky paint smell! I painted the island at night after my daughter went to sleep. To be honest, I have read on products before that they don’t smell.. but really the smell lingers. So, I started at night to just make sure that if there was indeed a smell, it would disappear by the morning. Also, I have horrendous allergies to paint – like if I smell it for too long, I cannot stop sneezing. So I was a bit apprehensive when the label on the paint said “virtually odourless and zero VOC” because in my experience, there is SOME smell.
You guys… I am not even exaggerating, when I say this, there was NO smell. I almost cried in happiness because it is so rare that this happens! I didn’t even sneeze once! And no one in my house could smell ANY paint (I asked them all!). I can personally vouch for this paint when it says its “virtually odourless”. Honestly, its completely odourless and if you or anyone in your home is sensitive to smell, YOU SHOULD CHECK THEM OUT!
Tones for Tot’s paint is also free of lead, phalates, formaldehyde and ammonia – none of the yucky stuff around my girl! It is truly refreshing to use a paint (since I love painting everything in sight hehe) that you can truly feel good about, especially with little ones around. You could use this to repaint an old crib in a fun bright colour (Check out their beautiful colours including a super cute mauve, baby pink and mint green!!I know whats happening to our girls old crib when we have baby # 2 haha!). I went with the baby blue/gray colour called Little Whale because our whole house scheme is in those colours and our family room rug pulls on that same tone of blue.
Not only are the colours super fun and beautiful, but lets just take a moment and talk about the coverage. The kitchen island is a decent size.. its not small by any standards. I painted it with THREE coats of this paint with ONE little pot. That is pure magic in my personal opinion! and it dries matt, no streaks – and mind you, our island was a brown before, so I needed more coats to have decent coverage. But if you have a lighter based colour you are painting over, you probably don’t need so many coats. Needless to say, the coverage is fantastic!! I shared some videos on my Instagram stories which I recorded while painting the island – you should check those out if you don’t believe me!
I also sealed the paint with the Tough Coat Matte Wipe-on Poly – which again, unlike your traditional poly from Home Depot, had NO smell.. I can’t even tell you enough times, how incredible this is. Given that we can’t open our windows or ventilate projects as frequently in the year, thanks to winter, the NO SMELL component is amazing for DIY’ers like myself. I also shared this on my stories, so check out those if you can!
So here is our whole island makeover – I think it looks pretty cute! What do you think?? Let me know in the comments below <3
So there you have it, friends! My newly painted kitchen island and I think it looks pretty good! If you are in the market for some paint to try out, you should definitely check out Fusion Mineral Paint and their amazing selection of colours! I highly highly recommend them for all the above reasons.
Lots of hugs!
