Okay – so its no secret that hydrangeas are one of the hardest flowers to make last. I mean, tulips are pretty comparable and I wrote about how to make them last longer HERE. But hydrangeas are particularly tricky.
I bought my very first bunch of the season last week and I immediately knew I wanted to share some tricks and tips I have learnt from our grocery shop florist – who is so knowledgable! I also shared these tips on my Instagram stories, so here is a quick round up.
If you have noticed, these babies have thick like THICK stalks. They are a pain to trim and I use a chopping knife because there just is no other way.
That is the first step – Trim the hydrangea stalks at an angle!
Next up – using your knife or whatever sharp utensil you feel comfortable with, split your stalks down the middle – This because the water can’t go through the thick stem as fast as the petals can droop.
Exposing the core of the stalks (white part as I so eloquently put it), helps with water absorption by increasing the surface area exposed to the hot water.
Okay – this last step is really key!
Fill up your vase with HOT and even BOILING HOT water. I have used boiling water in the past when the petals have been very droopy and instantly seen the flowers go back to how they looked a few days ago. This is because hot water will travel FASTER up the split stalk and to the blooms, whose plumpness depends on the quantity of water. Another reason why this is important is because, when the hydrangeas are cut off from the bush, a sap forms at the base which prevents the water from travelling up the stalk; Presumably you have already avoided this by trimming your stalks.
And thats all! You can repeat the above steps every 2-3 days. Hydrangeas drink up a lot of water, so remember to keep refilling your vase with HOT water and trim stalks as needed.
Hope this was helpful!
