DIY Farmhouse Scroll Sign

DIY· Freebies· Home Decor

So heres the deal… I love all things signs and words. Its not really a surprise then, that this is my 100th year in school then. So.. any chance I get I am looking at Etsy or Instagram and finding fun signs for our home. But if you live in Canada and you have shopped on Etsy, or even if you live in the US – things can get expensive pretty fast. Hand made signs are expensive and sometimes I just don’t have the budget for all the things I want. And… I also get bored of things really fast – so I don’t want to spend a lot of money on a sign that I will get bored of in a season.

I wanted to make a spring sign inspired by the Claude Monet quote ” I must have flowers always and always” as featured in the Magnolia Spring Issue. I also wanted to add in some floral wall installation that has been quite the rage on Instagram (Check out: House on 77th , Interior Swag, CottageonLex , The Thankful Farmhouse )

So, I set our to make my own little sign and it only cost $4!

Supplies needed:

  • Claud Monet Quote FREE PRINTABLE (scroll to the end of the post to get yours!)
  • 8.5 by 11 inch Card stock sheet
  • Twine or ribbon
  • Glue Gun and Glue
  • Two piece of flat moulding wood (1/4 inch thick and  1 inch wide) – my husband cut it to size for me and it was roughly 10.5-11 inches long
  • Sanding paper
  • Your favourite stain – I used this one

How to make the sign:

  • Print out the quote on card stock or paper of your choice. I used a pale blue card stock I had at home.
  • Light sand your two pieces of wood and stain your two pieces of wood and let them dry for 24 hours – the waiting part always kills me.. but I have learnt with time that if you don’t let the stain dry and cure for 24 hours at least, you can have nasty “stain” marks on your wall. So.. I patiently waited.
  • Stick the two pieces of stained wood onto your sign using a glue gun.
  • Cut a piece of twine into an approximately 6-8 inch piece (depends how low or high you want the scroll to hang
  • Hang on to your spot of choice! For me, I hung it on this 1920’s window from a local cottage that I  wanted to use for spring and summer decor.[bws_pinterest_pin_it type=”one” image_url=””]

I hope you enjoyed this quick and easy tutorial which didn’t break the bank, given that I had a lot of the supplies left over from previous DIY’s (stain, sand paper, glue gun, cardstock). If you do end up buying all the supplies fresh, know that you can use them for other fun DIY’s and they will pay off in value over time. Craft and DIY supplies are truly an investment in my opinion 🙂

If you make this scroll, please tag your photos on Instagram using the hashtag #MintCandyDIY so I can see them! Also don’t be shy and say hello on Instagram and follow along on Pinterest for more home decor/DIY inspo.

xoxo

[…] To tie them all together, I printed out this sign I had made 3 years ago and it is one of my most popular DIY’s to date. You can grab your free printable below, and get the full tutorial here to get the instructions! […]
